Red Wine

Henry Allen Healthy WineOver the 4th of July weekend, someone mentioned that drinking red wine is health for you.  The discussion revolved around resveratrol, an antioxidant found in red wine.  In my Wellness course, I lecture that according to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, drinking in moderation is defined as having no more than 1 drink per day for women and no more than 2 drinks per day for men.  Since the audience is college-aged, I emphasize that this is the number of drinks “per day” so they cannot “save” the total number of drinks per day for later in the week (i.e. 14 drinks on a Friday night is not acceptable).  I also mention that if you don’t drink, the research doesn’t show that you should start drinking to promote heart health.
